Owain Glyndŵr lecture to form part of Scientriffic
March 31 2009
Legendary Welsh warrior and scholar Owain Glyndŵr will be paying a special visit to the university which is named after him on Saturday 4 April.
A short dramatised lecture of his life, battles, and the mystery and myths surrounding his legacy has been written by students from Glyndŵr University in time for the science extravaganza Scientriffic.
During the event at the University’s new £3m performing arts and conference centre, Glyndŵr will detail his rise to the status of self-proclaimed Prince of Wales and the events leading up to his planned revolt against England’s rule over Wales.
His visit has been pencilled in to commemorate Glyndŵr University’s Year of Celebration, a year of events and activities celebrating its new status.
The University was formed in July 2008 when the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) was granted university status. It is a leading partner in the Wrexham Science Festival.
Sally Harrison, Lecturer in Humanities at Glyndŵr University, said: “We’ve brought together Media Communications students with Theatre and Performing Arts students with a will to celebrate and revive the legacy of Owain Glyndŵr. We’re offering an entertaining approach that we hope brings this character to life for all who come to watch.
“Of course, we reserve the right to artistic licence and welcome people, historians included (as long as they promise not to heckle), to come along, join in the fun and embrace the living spirit of this local hero and namesake of Glyndŵr University.”
Scientriffic runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 4 April at Glyndŵr University’s Plas Coch site and features more than 50 exhibitors offering hands-on science demonstrations and exhibits.
Attractions this year include a life-size polar bear, bouncing custard and live animals, plus spectacular science shows such as the Bubble Show and the Magic of Science.
Entry to Scientriffic is £6 adult, £4 child, £15 family and £3 each for organised groups of over 10 people.
All visitors to Scientriffic receive free entry to 'Owain Glyndŵr – Son of Destiny'. Two shows of this short dramatised lecture will be running at Glyndŵr University’s performing arts and conference centre, at 11.30am and 1.30pm. Entry passes to the event can be collected from Glyndŵr University main reception beforehand.
